I'm almost finished polishing/repairing the lip of my back wheel. I still need to fix a few small scratches and buff it. I started with 80 grit, then moved to 120, 220, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000. I was going to polish the whole wheel, but quickly realized I don't have the patience.
Mount the wheel on its axle and spin it with something and drag the sand paper as if it's on a lathe. :-D
